If you were to overlay a map of the state of Alaska over top of a map of the same scale of the lower 48 United States, you would be amazed to find that Alaska stretches nearly from coast to coast, and from the Canadian to the Mexican border. With 570,374 square miles of land, Alaska is easily the largest of the 50 United States. It also has the longest coastline of all the states.

Alaska is rich in natural resources such as petroleum, natural gas, coal, and gold, and it features over 3,500,000 lakes, making it a very “wet” state as well. Marshland and wetland permafrost also co-exist with 16,000 square miles of glacier ice.

Although home to less than one million inhabitants, over 10 percent of Alaskans classify themselves as Native descent. Of these, approximately 4,000 are Aleuts, 12,300 are Athabascan, 15,200 are Inupiat, 9,300 are Tlingit/Haida, 1,300 are Tsimshian, and 21,000 are Yupik. The various Alaska Natives differ in ethnic origin, culture, and language. Originally reaching Alaska by way of the Bering Land Bridge (which is submerged now), Alaska Natives live in a number of different geographic and climatological regions.

Alaska’s biggest exports are seafood, crude oil, and minerals. Because of the difficulty in importing goods from the lower 48 states, Alaskans strive for self-sufficiency as much as possible. Even so, food and fuel prices in Alaska are much higher than in other states.

Alaska also strives to keep smart young people from leaving and taking their skills with them. To this end, the state will pay for four years of college at the University of Alaska for the top 10 percent of high school graduates.

If you visit Alaska, you will have a vast array of choices of things to do and see. Most likely, more than one visit will be necessary to take in all that Alaska has to offer.

Anchorage has a small, but beautiful zoo. On the outskirts of Anchorage is Potter’s Marsh, which features plenty of birds, and sometimes-larger animals such as moose. If you’re in Alaska during the summer, you can visit Cook Inlet and watch large numbers of salmon swimming upstream.

In Homer, Alaska during the summer, high temperatures average around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. A small “frontier” town nestled in the Kachemak Bay, Homer affords gorgeous views of glaciers, mountains and wildlife. But winter is still a bustling season here, with annual festivals and fishing tournaments.

And if you’re in Alaska in the winter, you’ll have the chance to see the amazing Aurora Borealis, the grand “curtains” of colored light visible in the hours around midnight. The weather and the phase of the moon will dictate how easy it is to see the Aurora Borealis, but if you’re lucky, you’ll see one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena.

Juneau, this gorgeous city is a centerpiece of an Inside Passage cruise and a great jumping-off point for traveling within Southeast Alaska. Airplanes and boats are the only ways to get here and away.

Nome may well be Alaska’s most exciting destination for independent adventurers. It’s also the most famous gold rush town in Alaska.

Anchorage, is an ideal base camp for exploring pristine wilderness by day while enjoying urban conveniences by night.

Denali National Park, the “crown jewel” of Alaska. Six million acres of lakes, tundra, peaks, wildlife. North America’s highest peak. Just one road into it.

Talkeetna, Quintessential Alaska pioneer town halfway to Denali. Ideal combo of outdoor recreation and small-town relaxation, plus stunning McKinley views.

Central Kenai Peninsula, outdoor playground just a day trip from Anchorage. World-class fishing, hiking, rafting, and canoeing—plus alpine lakes and gold history.

There’s no doubt about it: once you go to Alaska, you’ll be hooked. One visit isn’t nearly enough time to experience all the great adventures this state has in store for you!
