Alaska is rich in natural resources such as petroleum, natural gas, coal, and gold, and it features over 3,500,000 lakes, making it a very “wet” state as well. Marshland and wetland permafrost also co-exist with 16,000 square miles of glacier ice.

Alaska’s biggest exports are seafood, crude oil, and minerals. Because of the difficulty in importing goods from the lower 48 states, Alaskans strive for self-sufficiency as much as possible. Even so, food and fuel prices in Alaska are much higher than in other states.

Alaska also strives to keep smart young people from leaving and taking their skills with them. To this end, the state will pay for four years of college at the University of Alaska for the top 10 percent of high school graduates.
