Berlin is home to the largest zoo in Europe, the Berlin Zoo, or in German, Berliner Tiergarten. Though the zoo offers a wide variety of exotic animals, from spotted snow leopards to flamingos, it is most known for it polar bear cub, Knut. The zoo is a very beautiful outing, and with enough to do to make a day out of the visit.

While in Berlin you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit the Gemaeldegallerie art gallery. It houses the world’s largest collection of Rembrandts, as well as paintings and sculptures by other world renowned artists. As the gallery has a lot to offer, it is best to put a side a whole day for a visit. However, if you are not interested in viewing all the art, the whole gallery can be done in half a day.

If art galleries aren’t your thing, you may want to consider the East Side Gallery. Located on the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery consists of a series of paintings painted right onto a section of the Berlin Wall by artists from over 21 countries. The “gallery” also makes for a beautiful walk and is a good way to see the Berlin Wall.

If you are looking for a relaxing day trip, the Berlin Hinterland is a beautiful escape that is close enough to the city that you don’t need to make additional overnight accommodations. The Hinterlands consist of a beautiful array of forests, beaches, and lakes. Here you will be able to lay out on the beach all day without ever seeing another person. Because of the privacy provided by these isolated lakes and beaches, nude tanning and swimming are not uncommon, so be forewarned.

Finally, if you are a history buff, you will probably want to visit Checkpoint Charlie. During the Cold War, this was the only place you could go to West Berlin form East Berlin. At the time, the point was surrounded by soldiers patrolling the wall, topped by razor wire. Now people are free to pass at anytime.

Berlin is such a large city and there is so much to do there. We suggest that you go off on your own and venture through the city to see all that it has to offer. There is so much to discover in Berlin and its surrounding areas. Hiring a car hire Berlin is a cheap way of seeing the sights.
