There’s no telling exactly how many tattoos actor Brad Pitt has. Brad lives a very private life, and his tattoos have a very distinct, yet secretive origin.

Unlike his love partner Angelina, Brad stays pretty quiet about the significance of his ink. The following Brad Pitt tattoos are his most popular and sought after designs.
Back Tattoo

Brad’s latest back tattoo created quite a media frenzy with great speculation on the meaning behind the lines. The sketched linear pattern consists of several small choppy lines with seemingly no relation to one another. Many theories quickly developed behind the unique and modern tattoo.

The first theory was that Brad’s tattoo signified the downed levees that caused the New Orleans catastrophe after Hurricane Katrina made waves.

Brad Pitt was very involved in the relief of Hurricane Katrina victims, and even backed the “Make it Right” project which benefited those who lost their homes and were displaced after the devastation of the hurricane.

The “Make it Right” project funded the construction of new, environmentally friendly green homes for the victims of the Katrina disaster.

Another theory behind Brad’s back tattoo was that the lines portrayed the city streets that made the French Quarter in New Orleans.

Onlookers turned to city maps to check the placement and pattern of the lines. Although both theories were unique and quite intelligent, they were both crushed when Angelina Jolie later admitted in an exclusive interview that she sketched the tattoo on Brad’s back out of pure boredom.

Angie claimed that Brad loved the temporary design she sketched and had it inked permanently.

Tom Hardy is easily one of the hottest actors in Hollywood right now. Roles in Black Hawk Down, Star Trek: Nemesis, Bronson, and Inception put him on the map, while roles in Warrior, This Means War, and The Dark Knight Rises look to make him a full blown star.

On top of being a great actor, capable of taking on just about any role (the guy could be in a stage production of Mrs. Doubtfire and I’d watch it…ok, I’d watch that anyway…ok, I already wrote the script…. and did a dress rehearsal with my stuffed animals), Tom Hardy is also a big fan of getting tattooed.

In a recent interview, he stated, “Every tattoo I have means something to me.

Each one is something that I’ve been through in my life or I’ve done or I’ve been,”. Some of Tom’s ink-work includes: a star from when he found out he was going to be a father, the phrases “Figlio mio bellisimo” (”my beautiful son”) and “Padre fiero” (”proud father”), the name of his agent (fulfilling a promise that he’d get her name on him if she got him into Hollywood), a Union Jack, a tribal design, some sort of graffiti, and some female imagery (perhaps a mother holding a baby).

The star has love for his country as one of his most recent is the Union Jack flag on his upper left chest – Good man!

Tom has said: “Every tattoo I have means something to me. Each one is something that I’ve been through in my life or I’ve done or I’ve been.”

“Padre Fiero” is a tattoo above the flag and means “proud father” in Italian.

The tattoo on his stomach means, “Till I Die SW” and was for his ex-wife Sarah Ward.

When will they learn that inking a lovers name will only end in tears?

Tom is now engaged to British actress Charlotte Riley.

She’s a new mother and happily settled with husband Mike Comrie, but Hilary Duff still has a wild side.

The 25-year-old former Lizzie Maguire star proudly tweeted an image of herself getting her sixth tattoo, adding to her already impressive collection.

Hilary went under the needle on Thursday at Shamrock Social Club in Hollywood, where she got her third piece of body art on her forearm.

The new piece shows a sparrow with the words ‘Stand By Me’ under it.

In addition to her new bird, she has the French phrase ‘ma petite amie’ on the upper right side of her midsection. A female friend got a matching inscription, which translates to ‘my girlfriend’.

She also has the word ‘Shine’ on her right hand middle finger, plus a shining star on the back of her neck just below the hairline.

When it comes to tattoos, Hilary Duff can’t get enough.

Demi’s first tattoo was revealed in June 2010, 2 months before the Disney star’s 18th birthday. However Demi stated in an interview that she got the tattoo when she was 16 — how did no one notice it?!  The tattoo is of the words “you make me beautiful” written on the right side of her ribs. The phrase comes from the song “Beautiful” by Bethany Dillon, a song which Demi claims changed her life. When asked about it’s meaning, she explained:

The words were so encouraging and lifted me through a really dark time in my life. It’s kind of a Christian tattoo, so for me it’s religious, but it could be for anybody.

Demi first heard the song when she was 13 years old and it changed her outlook on life.  She connected with the song because she has dealt with eating disorders, self-harm and low self-esteem for many years.  Demi had the uplifting words inscribed in a time when she was still struggling, before receiving treatment.  This tattoo is very rarely seen so it seems that Demi got it mostly as a reminder to herself.  She told MTV:

It’s one of my favorite songs ever.  I got it because I was dealing with self-image issues.  So I got it tattooed on me to look in the mirror every day and remind myself that I am beautiful.

Demi later added a pair of feathers to the piece which were first shown off in September 2011, though it is not known precisely when they were actually added.

Demi Lovato has a turquoise feather behind her left ear which is just for fun.  In an interview with Hollywood Life she revealed that the feather has no personal meaning and is simply something that she likes. She says:

I have a feather behind my ear, and it honestly doesn’t mean anything. I just think it’s cute. It’s a light blue feather, but it looks more like a leaf, so I gotta fix it.

Demi Lovato’s newest tattoo is also her largest. She added a flock of flying birds on her right forearm surrounding her “faith” tattoo in November 2012.

Miley Cyrus has 16 tattoos. Her most recent tattoo is of a Theodore Roosevelt quote on her left forearm. The pop singer and former Hannah Montana star also has “Just Breathe” on her chest, “Love” in her ear, a dreamcatcher on her side, an anchor on her right wrist, an ohm symbol of her left wrist, a skull on her ankle, “Love Never Dies” on her arm, and Roman numerals in her elbow.

On her right hand she has 7 tiny tattoos on her fingers: an equal sign, a peace symbol, a cross, a heart, the word “karma,” an evil eye, and “Bad” from the Michael Jackson album.

Miley’s second tattoo is the word “LOVE” on the inside of her right ear. This tattoo was first spotted by the press in May 2010, but Miley had actually gotten the tattoo months before, at the time her father was having a tattoo done. The tattoo and its placement on her ear signifies drowning out negative messages and only hearing the positive things.

In July 2011 she had the word “karma” tattooed along the side of her index finger.

Karma is cause and effect that means good people will have good things happen to them while bad people will be punished. The concept comes from ancient India and is a part of a few religions including Hinduism and Buddhism.

Karma is often mentioned in Western culture in a way that is not tied to any religion but rather is a result of human interactions. We say that if you treat others well, you foster good will that will come back to benefit you.
