Galata Tower is a cylindrical tower made from stone and it is approximately 67 meters long. Until the 1960s it was a fire lookout tower. On the 17th century, Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi (an Ottoman citizen) attempted to fly from Galata Tower to Asian Shore of Uskudar and he worked on his project for years.
During the Ottoman period, Galata Tower functioned as jail, observatory house, and watch tower. After the restorations took place in 1960, Galata Tower was commercialized and opened to the public.
